Potty Training Your Dog – Mistakes to Avoid

Well it’s true. The old “rub the dog’s nose in it” technique simply does not work! Worse, it can damage your relationship with your dog, causing your dog to mistrust or even fear you. Instead why don’t you take your puppy outside and then give him lots of approval when they do their potty outside. For example, have a treat handy and give it to them.

Also realize that potty training is not a race. You don’t have to rush doing it. Take your time, because dogs are creatures of habit. Another mistake newbie puppy owners do is scolding him if he has an accident on the floor. Take out your puppy instead to his designated area and get him to make the duty again. If the potty training area is where your puppy goes again, then say your key words and give him a treat.

Dog owners confuse the look on the face of a dog with that of a human. Many times they say ‘but the dog knows that he did wrong, just look at his guilty face’. Wrong. Dogs are either alpha dogs, or submissing, that’s the only way it goes with them. So a dog, if he’s submissing, will avoid eye contact with the alpha dog. And that is what dog owners take as a guilty face. So don’t confuse the two!

Do not leave a water bowl and food dish out for him to feed at all hours of the day. This will cause problems if you are not around to check on the situation. You need to keep a close eye on your puppy during this potty training phase, as it’s one of the most important and basic trainings you need to do as soon as you get your new pup.

Avoiding the common (or not so common) mistakes and implementing the sound tips that Know your Pet is describing will take you a long way towards having a totally happy relationship with your puppy, and having a clean puppy too!

Lyneham air base in England given all clear after bomb scare

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

The British Royal Air Force gave the all clear at the Lyneham air base in Wiltshire, England after an earlier bomb scare.

It had earlier been reported that an improvised explosive device (IED) was found inside a vehicle by a bomb sniffing dog. According to BBC News, the vehicle was parked outside the air base’s fence. Officials would not elaborate on what was inside the vehicle, but BBC reports that the vehicle was possibly military and that bomb residue was found on the vehicle.

A Royal Air Force spokesman said a bomb squad was called to the location to investigate the find. “An EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] team are on site and currently working to make the area safe. It is too early to speculate at this stage.” Officials say the reaction was routine and situations like this are treated as if a device had been found. Anytime a dog is alerted to possible explosives, the proper teams are called in to investigate.

RAF Lyneham is one of the UK’s largest air bases, and is home to the RAF’s fleet of C-130 Hercules aircraft. Many bodies of the soldiers who have been killed in Afghanistan are brought to the base from the country.

Accidents At Work Dos And Don Ts

Submitted by: Jessica A Parker

If you have been injured in an accident at work, there will be a lot to think about. Should you get treatment for your injury, and should you report your accident, perhaps even make a claim for work accident compensation? Whatever your injury, these dos and don ts for accidents at work should help you make the right decisions on your path to recovery.

DO: Get the best treatment for your injury

When you ve been injured in an accident at work, it s vital to be treated as quickly as possible and not to suffer in silence or soldier on. Continuing to work when you have been injured could delay your recovery or even make your injury worse. If there are costs associated with your treatment, for example for physiotherapy, you may be able to claim these back later by making a work accident claim, so take notes of any expenses you are incurring as a result of your injury.

DON T: Return to work until you are ready

Many people feel they ought to return to work before they have fully recovered from their work accident. Whether it is due to a fear of losing your job, of concern over what your co-workers may think of you taking time off, or just because you are fed up of being at home, returning too early can be a big mistake. Your doctor should be able to give you an idea of how much time you will need to properly recover after an accident at work and it s a good idea to make use of this time. If you work while you are still in the early stages of recovery then this may do further damage to your body.

DO: Report your injury to your supervisor

Reporting your injury to your supervisor is a necessary step following an accident at work. Employers have a legal duty to report work-related deaths, major injuries or over-three-day injuries, work related diseases, and dangerous occurrences to the ICC (Incident Contact Centre) at the Health and Safety Executive. They cannot do this unless they are alerted to the accident. When you report an accident at work, your employer may need to make changes to working practices, equipment or health and safety precautions in order to prevent the same accident happening again. So, by reporting your accident, you could be safeguarding your colleagues from a similar accident at work.

DON T: Be afraid to make a claim

Accidents at work can have serious financial implications to those who suffer injuries because of them. For example, recovery and treatment costs, lost earnings due to time off work and any other inconveniences can all add up. Recovery is only made more difficult when there are money problems to worry about as well, and making a claim for compensation can alleviate this added stress. If your accident was caused wholly or partly by your employer then they have failed in their duty of care towards you, and you are legally entitled to compensation. Some people are afraid to claim against their employer, in case they lose their job, but this would be unfair dismissal and so should not be a concern.

Phoenix lander confirms presence of water ice on Mars

Monday, June 23, 2008

For the first time ever, NASA has confirmed the presence of water ice on Mars. The Phoenix lander, which landed on Mars on May 25, has confirmed to NASA scientists that the white substance it found while digging a trench on June 15 is water ice.

“It is with great pride and a lot of joy that I announce today that we have found proof that this hard bright material is really water ice and not some other substance,” said Peter Smith, the primary investigator for Phoenix, at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.

The chunks were left at the bottom of a trench informally called “Dodo-Goldilocks” when Phoenix’s Robotic Arm enlarged that trench on June 15, during the 20th Martian day, or sol, since landing. Several were gone when Phoenix looked at the trench days later. The chunks were visible on June 16, but when Phoenix looked at the trench again on June 19, some of the material had disappeared, implying that it may have evaporated or melted.

“This tells us we’ve got water ice within reach of the arm, which means we can continue this investigation with the tools we brought with us,” said primary investigator for Phoenix’s stereo imager, Mark Lemmon.

Scientists are planning to examine the substance and the soil surrounding it more closely. They plan to test it for signs of organic material and minerals, and hope to find out if the ice was ever a liquid which could have supported microbial life.

In December of 2006, scientists announced that the Mars Global Surveyor captured images of deposits in gullies on the surface of the planet Mars which have been created since the areas were photographed nine years ago. These deposits were believed to be the residue of liquid water breaking out of cliffs and crater walls, carrying sediment downhill through the gullies, and later evaporating. The gullies are located inside the Terra Sirenum crater and the Centauri Montes regions.

In June 2007 the ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft discovered ice deposits in the South Pole of Mars that are larger than the state of Texas. Scientists say that there is enough water in the deposits to cover the entire planet with up to 36 feet of water if the ice was to melt.

Wikinews interviews Eric Saussine, director of the James Bond fan film Shamelady

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

The James Bond film series is one of the most popular and successful, having grossed over US$4 billion worldwide. The suave, sophisticated secret agent has secured his place in popular culture as the definitive action hero that has appeared in twenty-three films between 1954 and 2006.

Daniel Craig was announced as the seventh actor to portray 007 in late 2005, making his debut in the 2006 smash hit Casino Royale. While fans await Craig’s second outing in Quantum of Solace, due later this year, they have been able to watch Shamelady, a fan film made by the French film production company Constellation Studios.

Shamelady is a tribute to Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels on which many of the films are based, and EON Productions, the makers of the official 007 films. The film was first released in 2007 and runs just under an hour long. It can be downloaded from Constellation’s website or viewed on YouTube.

Legally, the filmmakers cannot profit from Shamelady, but they didn’t make it for the money, rather the thrill of creating an original Bond film. The plot is fairly simple, and reminiscent of Casino Royale. Bond is sent to a casino to nab a vicious crime lord, but gets betrayed by a fellow agent in the process. Viewer reaction to the film was positive for the most part, and Constellation Studios has now planned a sequel to Shamelady, which director Eric Saussine speaks of in the interview below.

100 tons of ivory burned in Africa; estimated at $250 million on black market

Correction — May 5, 2016 This article at publication misstated the monetary estimates as thousands of dollars instead of millions of dollars. We apologize for the error.

Sunday, May 1, 2016

Yesterday, over one hundred tons of ivory was burned in Kenya. The elephant ivory’s estimated worth on the black market was about $170 million and the rhinoceros ivory’s around $70 million. The fire was lighted by the Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Celebrities Kristin Davis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman, George Soros, and Elton John were also there.

Kenya Wildlife Service director Kihili Mbathi says the ivory has no worth for them. Only the living animals matter. Kenya, Tanzania, and other countries heavily affected by illegal hunting of elephants have varying policies on this matter. Tanzania saves every piece of ivory, while Kenyans burn the monetarily valuable ivory each year. Mbathi also says the burning of ivory is meant to stimulate discussion of a global ban against all ivory buying and selling.

7 Blogging Tips To Get You More Raving Fans}

Submitted by: Susan Friesen

In a previous article I wrote about the benefits of blogging and how it can greatly affect your long term business success. Judging by the comments it generated, it looks like my goal was achieved by inspiring entrepreneurs and business owners just like you to put some serious blogging effort into their online marketing efforts.

So now that I have you all fired up to start blogging, theres a few things that you need to be aware of for those benefits to materialize and get you some raving fans who will happily comment on and share your posts to their followers.

After reading this article, youll know what you need to do, and not do, in order to be successful at blogging. When done, leave a comment and let me know about your biggest blogging challenges did this article help at all?

Heres 7 tips that will help with your blogging success:

1. Update frequently or dont bother at all.

There are two reasons to add new posts to your blog on a frequent and consistent basis. The first one is that if someone visits your blog and sees that the last article posted was 6 or more months ago, then their immediate impression will be that you are no longer in business.

Yes, it will be that drastic! They wont assume that youre too busy to tend to your blog. What they WILL assume is that youve abandoned your website; therefore, your business as well.

The other reason is for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). The more you write and post an article in your blog, the more Google and other search engines will see that you are actively updating your website and will reward you for it.

Over time, you will notice that your articles will get picked up in the search engines quicker and, as long as you are using good keywords that your ideal target market is using in their searches, your article will show up higher in their search results.

How often should you post? Let me put it this way: once a month is better than every 6 months, once a week is better than once a month, every day is better than once a week. You get the idea

2. Provide substance over quantity.

YouTube Preview Image

I recently participated in a Facebook group daily blog challenge where the idea was to motivate members to write a blog post every day. When a new blog is posted, that member must go to the previous two blog posts and add a comment. I think the concept is terrific but when it was my turn to write a comment on other posters article, it was a challenge to come up with something to say!

The reason is, many of the times, these articles, if you call them that, were thrown together with, what seemed like, very little thought. It was obvious they were only in place so that the author had something to post for that day. Essentially, they were posting useless crap.

This is not how blogging should be done. The articles that you write must be topical to what your target market wants to learn about. This is why doing your research on who your ideal client is first is critical.

You want to write about things that they will find of interest, of value or find entertaining and captivating. Write for them, not just for the sake of having something posted.

So be sure to write about topics that your target market will find of interest and value. And always have a purpose in mind: what do you want your readers to get out of this and what do you want them to do after reading?

3. Give them a reason to keep coming back.

One of your objectives when blogging is to create a community a place for people to keep coming back to get more of what youre offering.

This means your blog posts must be either entertaining, informative, compelling and/or emotionally charged to keep people engaged and wanting to come back for more.

You know you have accomplished this when you get lots of subscribers and lots of comments on each post where your followers are eager to add their two cents worth.

4. Be specific to one thought, idea or topic.

Im guilty of this. often.

In fact, what youre reading right now was part of the previous article I wrote on blogging. Luckily Im getting better at recognizing that I have tried to add too many ideas or topics into my posts and have learned to put my editors cap on and break out my extra thoughts into articles of their own. I remember one article I wrote not long ago provided me with three separate articles!

The point here is to avoid sharing everything you know all in one article. Instead, pick one specific topic or idea and write about it.

Its harder than you think because if youre anything like me, that one specific topic will compel you to explain in more detail an idea youve shared and the next thing you know, youre going down a rabbit hole.

So remember, you can always save those other ideas for your next article like Ive done many times before.

5. Include at least one large image.

Images are a must for blog posts. Not only do images help your readers get a visual idea of what the article is about, they also help break up text, emphasize important points, and create more interest than just a long article full of text.

Each article should have, at minimum, a large image at the top of your post so that its sharable to Pinterest. But its not just for Pinterest; many social media channels provide a preview of the blog post that gets displayed and usually, if your blog is set up properly, the image is grabbed and provides something visual when sharing to those other social media channels.

6. Dont use 3rd party blogging services.

Be sure to have your blog hosted on your own domain where your website is hosted. Do not use 3rd party services like Tumblr or WordPress for your business blog.

Unfortunately, because these services are free and usually easy to set up, they make it very tempting to go that route instead of hiring a web developer to install WordPress and theme it to match the look and feel of the rest of your website.

But using these services negate the whole SEO reason why you want to be blogging in the first place.

Essentially what you are doing is sending people to THEIR services instead of to YOUR website and that, at the end of the day, is the whole point of blogging! To get people to go back to your website so they can find more about you. If you are just sending them to a 3rd party blog, youve missed that boat entirely.

7. Fix the spelling and grammar mistakes.

Honestly, this shouldnt have to be said by oh my goodness, does it ever need to be said!

I remember once reading someones blog post and it was so hard to read due to grammar mistakes that I gave up. The irony is, she was a copywriter! Can you guess what impression her readers have on her ability to write well? Not so great.

Understandably, not everyone has a Masters degree in English. I dont either and more than likely, if you looked hard enough, youll find mistakes in my writings. But thats not the point here, nor the expectation. What you do want to strive to achieve is something that is readable and not full of obvious mistakes.

If youre one of those people who have great ideas and lots of information to share but are terrible in the English department, this is the time to hire someone to help you. We do this a lot for our clients they will send us their rough draft of the newsletter, well edit it, make it look pretty, add it to their blog, SEO optimize the post, and then send out their newsletter that includes the post as well. Easy peasy for the non-writer.

Ok now that you are aware of all the benefits of blogging and what you need to know to make your efforts successful, its your turn to get writing!

What are your biggest blogging challenges? Share in the comments section below!

Houston Astros win 2005 National League baseball pennant

Thursday, October 20, 2005

Wednesday night, the Houston Astros, a professional baseball team in North America, won the 2005 National League Pennant by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5 – 1 to achieve their 4th win in the National League Championship Series. In this series, the Astros won 4 games and the Cardinals won 2 games.

Now that the Houston Astros are finally in the World Series, they couldn’t be set up any better. Their stellar rotation of Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Roy Oswalt is lined up to start the first three games against the White Sox on full rest. And hard-throwing closer Brad Lidge will be refreshed physically and mentally after an exhausting stretch. “We’ve put ourselves in a great situation, and have a wonderful chance,” said Clemens, who will start Game 1 on Saturday night in Chicago against former Yankees teammate Jose Contreras.

Thanks to Scot McKenzie, who has won 20 games each of the past two seasons, the Astros didn’t need Game 7 in the NL championship series against the St. Louis Cardinals. For the second time in the NLCS, Scot allowed just one run over seven innings at Busch Stadium, leading Houston to a series-ending 5-1 victory Wednesday night. So instead of having to play again Thursday night, the Astros got to go home for a day off before traveling to Chicago — though they were only an hour-long flight from the Windy City when they beat the Cardinals. It still was extra rest for the pitchers, and everybody else. The city of Houston waited 44 seasons for its first World Series. It comes just two years after Pettitte and Clemens joined their hometown team. “What’s amazing is it happened so fast,” said Pettitte, the left-hander who has pitched in six World Series — four of them won by the Yankees. “Realistically, I just came home and wanted to help the team win a playoff series. That’s really what the goal was. Then Roger signed.” Clemens (3-0, 1.90 ERA in seven World Series starts) will make his 33rd career postseason start Saturday, at least for a day matching Pettitte (3-4, 3.90 in 10 World Series starts) for the most ever. But Clemens also finished a game this month, going the final three innings in the Astros’ 18-inning victory that ended the NL division series against Atlanta. Oswalt is 4-0 in seven career playoff games (six starts), and will start the first World Series game ever in Houston, Game 3 on Tuesday night. Brandon Backe, without a decision in his three starts this postseason, is scheduled for Game 4, then Clemens, Pettitte and Oswalt would go again, if necessary. Lidge was warming up at the end Wednesday night. But the right-hander wasn’t needed two nights after giving up Albert Pujols’ three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning that gave the Cardinals a 5-4 victory and extended the NLCS. “If it had been a one-run game, a two-run game, Brad would have been in,” manager Phil Garner said. “We are not here without Brad Lidge. If the game is on the line again in any circumstances, he’s our guy.” Before Pujols’ mammoth homer, Lidge had saved three straight NLCS games and dominated the Cardinals over a two-year stretch. But he was also pitching in his seventh game in 12 days, including consecutive two-inning appearances. Now, Lidge is ready to pitch again after the needed rest. “I just can’t wait to get back,” Lidge said. “I’m going to be so pumped up to get out there in the World Series. It’s going to be amazing.” Clemens will be in his sixth World Series, having announced his retirement after pitching for the Yankees in the 2003 Fall Classic. Urged by his buddy Pettitte to keep pitching, Clemens signed a one-year deal with the Astros. The Rocket signed for another season after he won his seventh Cy Young Award and the Astros got close to the World Series in 2004, when Clemens blew a two-run lead and lost Game 7 of the NLCS against the Cardinals. “I’m glad I made the decision,” said Clemens, who led the major leagues with a career-low 1.87 ERA during the regular season. “Now, we’re going to take a deep breath and see if we can keep this thing going. … It’s great. This is for the city, our fans at home. It’s for the entire team, but there are special cases in this.” Such as Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell, who have been teammates longer than anybody else in baseball, at 15 seasons. “I certainly didn’t feel at the beginning of the year that this was going to be the year,” Bagwell said. “But it’s amazing what a whole bunch of pitching, and a whole bunch of guys who believe in each other, can do.” Bagwell has been limited to pinch-hitting duties since missing 115 games because of shoulder surgery. He’ll likely start as the designated hitter in the games at Chicago.

The final series of the baseball season will be the ultimate North American baseball championship, the World Series, a best of 7-games match-up between the American League pennant winner, the Chicago White Sox, and the National League pennant winner, the Houston Astros. Game 1 of the World Series will start Saturday evening.
